Choosing Exterior Colors in Dallas HOA Neighborhoods
Much of Dallas — from Far North Dallas subdivisions to master-planned communities — lives under HOA color rules. Choosing an exterior palette you love that also sails through architectural review takes strategy. Here's how.
Know the rules before you fall in love
Get your HOA's approved palette or guidelines first, before sampling. Many Dallas HOAs specify exact color families, trim rules, and even sheen. Designing within the lines from the start saves a rejected application and weeks of delay.
Work with the architecture
Dallas brick ranch homes, stucco contemporaries, and traditional two-stories each suit different palettes. As a rule: respect the fixed elements (brick tone, roof color, stone) — your paint colors should harmonize with them, not fight them. When in doubt, pull trim and accent colors from the brick's own undertones.
Texas light is part of the palette
Colors read lighter and warmer in our intense sun. That sophisticated greige can wash to near-white on a south elevation; deep charcoals can go almost black. Always sample on the actual house, on multiple exposures, and check at different times of day.
Getting approved smoothly
Submit exactly what your HOA asks for: color names and numbers, which color goes where (body, trim, accent, door), and sometimes a photo mockup. Painters experienced with Dallas HOAs know the drill and can help package the application.
